About us

Reading, period. Since 2009.

Kusoma Tu is committed to seeing people read the word of God so that they may know Christ and follow Him.

Founder’s story

As an educator for four decades, I am passionate about teaching, especially reading, because I realised that if you do not know how to read, you cannot learn.

Kusoma Tu Foundation Trust was launched in 2009 following a conversation with a candidate waiting to begin her exams, who confessed that she couldn’t read or write. Kusoma Tu was established to respond to the needs of children in public schools who were completing primary school and had not learnt how to read.

Beginning with one volunteer with three books, we established a reading intervention programme at Kawangware and Jamhuri primary schools in Nairobi County, with support from partners like the Braeburn School and Nairobi Chapel. In the first five years, we taught over 250 pupils how to read.

I believe we can teach everyone to read using phonics and stories told in a way learners can relate to their environment. Over the years we have developed a reading manual with learning materials customised for the African and Kenyan child, plus training programmes so individuals and schools can teach reading “the Kusoma Tu Way”.

“You have to learn to read so you can read to learn.”

Our scheme combines different learning styles and uses a multi-age approach, so every learner is catered for.
